Author Visits for Schools and Libraries
I do a limited number of school visits per year so please book early. My author visits can include large-group presentations or small-group classroom visits and workshops. It is important to group students by age so that the material can be tailored specifically to the audience. I’m happy to attend lunches with select groups of students if the school wishes to use those as an incentive (such as a reward for outstanding reading or writing accomplishments). Schools may choose to provide students with the option to purchase my books in advance of my visit and I will be happy to autograph any purchased books. Schools can contact their local independent bookstores to handle the ordering and sales processes. This is a great way to support your local book shop! Please note that if a school decides to offer autographed books, volunteers will be needed.
Large Groups
In lively interactive large-group presentations, Cheryl focuses on her research and writing process. She describes the process of creating a book (from drafting to final revision) and the three Ps: Practice, Persistence, and Patience. She talks about inspiration, bad first drafts, and revision strategies and displays photos associated with her books in a slideshow presentation.
For her HUNGRY COYOTE sessions, Cheryl explores students’ existing knowledge and common misconceptions about coyotes in an engaging Q&A format. She ends these assemblies with a fun puppet-led howling competition. For her LIZZIE AND THE LOST BABY assemblies, Cheryl talks about the evacuation of over three million children during World War II and the life on the road of English Gypsy Travelers.
Small Groups
Tailored for smaller groups, classroom visits (30 mins) and writing workshops (60 mins) allow students a more personal experience with the author. Cheryl offers the following opportunities:

Tailored for smaller groups, classroom visits (30 mins) and writing workshops (60 mins) allow students a more personal experience with the author. Cheryl offers the following opportunities:
- The author's journey: The path from a childhood love of reading to a published book.
- Research, writing and revision: A discussion of her research and writing process with a focus on revision.
- Turning ideas into stories: an overview of the process of creating a book (from drafting to final revision).
- A customized program to suit your needs. For example, using HUNGRY COYOTE as a model, Cheryl discusses incorporating rich sensory language (active verbs, alliteration, onomatopoeia) into stories. Using LIZZIE AND THE LOST BABY, cheryl discusses point of view in story, historical research and accuracy, and research methods.
- Story building: Working together to create a story by focusing on character, setting, plot, conflict and resolution. Some writing practice is involved.
