Swainedale

Lizzie is evacuated to a fictional Yorkshire dale (valley) called Swainedale. Swainedale is modeled on a place I know well - Rosedale in the North York Moors. If you walk the road up the dale you'll find the row of houses above - it's the one I used for a model of the place where Madge and Elsie lived. My parents owned one of these houses for 30 years. I've included photographs of Rosedale in Yorkshire in the slide show below.
